Citing her opponent as too partisan, a group of bipartisan business leaders endorsed Judge Susan Crawford in the State Supreme Court election on April 1.

The group called Crawford “a balanced, nonpartisan jurist” who will “maintain the impartiality, fairness and trust in our judiciary that is essential for our state’s economy to thrive.” They went on to say that economic stability will be on the line in addition to matters of justice and fairness.

Crawford has a long list of endorsements including justices, judges, sheriffs and community leaders from throughout Wisconsin, who have praised her record of impartiality and pragmatism and her defense of rights and freedoms.

Several of the important issues from the 2023 Supreme Court election, such as abortion and redistricting, will likely shape this contest, we would argue there are even bigger risks in play for the economic and civic health of our state, wrote Anoop Prakash, Tom Florsheim, and David Lubar, in an op-ed in the Milwaukee Journal. The three are members of the Wisconsin Business Leaders for Democracy, a bi-partisan group of business leaders.

The group lauded Crawford’s career as a public servant and a private attorney, noting that Schimel has always been a politician first. They emphasized that his endorsements are mostly sheriffs and that the contrast between the two is clear, adding that she “promises the balance and impartiality that Wisconsin’s economy needs.”

Schimel, meanwhile, has expressed his support for extreme partisan positions and politicians, they argued.

They wrote, Since running as a GOP candidate in 2015, Schimel has further bolstered his partisan credentials, participating in the RNC convention, traveling to Washington D.C. for the 2025 inauguration, and actively campaigning with Turning Point Action to elect President Trump.  He openly supported Trump’s pardon of January 6 convicts and was recorded saying that “another bloody revolution” was needed to reclaim freedom in America.

A new mailer sent out by the Schimel campaign promises he “will support Trump’s agenda,” adding “Together we won the White House. Now it’s time to win the courthouse!"

Elon Musk has poured millions into the Schimel campaign.

Crawford is currently the Dane Co. Circuit Court Judge while Schimel, the former Attorney  General under Scott Walker, is a Waukesha Co. judge.

The endorsement by Wisconsin Business Leaders for Democracy was published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
